The Winter Classic is without any doubt the best thing during the NHL regular season. It has become a tradition since 2008 and has attracted between 38,000 and 105,000 fans, the latter is the last record and was achieved last year at Michigan Stadium, which saw the Toronto Maple Leafs prevailed against the Detroit Red Wings.
One of the driving force of the Winter Classic has been the work relations between the NHL and HBO since the 2011 between Pittsburgh and Washington, which created the TV Show 24/7 Road to the NHL Winter Classic. HBO has created the show 24/7 in 2007 with an all-access/behind the scenes of certain praised boxe match-ups. The show has been praised for its visual quality as well as its « amazing » narrative (Liev Schreiber). Since then, HBO has worked with the NASCAR and the NHL.
In 2011, hockey fans had the chance to watch on TV a behind the scenes like never before. An all-access inside the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals. Between Crosby’s laughs and Boudreau’s fit of anger, the success was immediate. The deal between the NHL and HBO went on for two more years, with the same success in 2012, between the Flyers and the Rangers thanks to Bryzgalov and Tortorella. Unfortunately the third edition was a little bit different, and well a little bit disappointed. Between a over protective Babcock and uncomfortable Carlyle, both teams were not fairplay on this one. But the last season was the last one for HBO, indeed they announced back in September that they were not renewing their agreement. Lots of fan were asking the question if the show would be be back. The NHL has responded with a big yeas two days ago by posting on Facebook the trailer of the new show, simply called, Road to the NHL Winter Classic, which will air December 16th. Even if the show seems to be as good and could be even better than its predecessor,, the new show could lack the amazing voice of Liev Schreiber, who has recently signed an exclusive contract with HBO.
